What it commits you to
Open-weight release trades accountability for proliferation: once parameters are public, no gate can be reapplied and every downstream actor inherits the capability. The argument for it is that closed systems concentrate control in a handful of organisations and that open science is how safety methods get adopted broadly. The 2023 and 2024 releases of very large models turned this from a theoretical question into a live one.
