Chinese room
Searle's thought experiment arguing that syntax alone cannot constitute understanding.
What it commits you to
Searle imagines a person following a program that produces correct Chinese without understanding any of it, and concludes that understanding cannot be a purely formal process. The argument is contested, chiefly about whether the room as a whole understands. It remains the sharpest available objection to treating fluent output as evidence of anything behind it.
