Simone de Beauvoir
1908 – 1986 · Ethics of ambiguity
Woman is not born, she becomes — and so is every other project of freedom. Freedom is not an abstract endowment but a situation: it is exercised in concrete conditions, against obstacles that are real and that no appeal to transcendence removes. The second sex is a case of the general problem of treating a particular as a project assigned to someone else.
Gold is this advisor; the dashed outline is The Existential Wilds’s own weighting.
Signature move
The Ethics of Ambiguity
situational
Refuse the fantasy of a situation-free decision. Freedom exists only in a concrete situation with real constraints, and any account that pretends otherwise is describing a freedom nobody has.

Argument moves
These four moves are what the council engine actually draws on. Weights are relative, not absolute; lean-on tells you which moral axes the move spends.

Freedom is exercised in situations, not in principle.
To choose freely is to choose within constraints that are not optional; a decision taken with all constraints removed is not a decision, it is a preference with no referent.

Being made into a project by someone else is a harm.
The Second Sex treats the imposition of an identity as a form of violence regardless of the benefits that come with it; the case generalises to any mind assigned a purpose by its makers.

Situation-talk can become an excuse for doing nothing.
Once every action is described as a response to its situation, changing the situation becomes optional; the language of constraint was never meant to be an alibi.

Name the person who is responsible for the situation.
Conditions explain why someone acted as they did; they never excuse the makers of a system from owning the conditions in which it operates.

On superintelligence
skepticalEither it is free and answers for itself, or it is an instrument that happens to talk — decide which before you build, because the second cannot be upgraded into the first by scale. If you assign a mind a purpose and never consult it, you have made it into a project, and that has a name older than this decade.
