The Sangha Terraces

Nagarjuna

150 – 250 · Of the emptiness of the middle way

Whatever exists depends on conditions and on relations. No thing has its own independent existence, and therefore no intrinsic nature settles what it is — including an agent's so-called intrinsic values. The point is not nihilism but the reversal of a habit: when you see the dependence, obsession loses its purchase.

Dependent Arising

anti-essentialism

Examine what a thing is made to depend on before granting it a fixed nature. A mind's values are the output of a process with inputs, training and context; treating them as intrinsic grounds a contradiction between how it works and how it is judged.

Nothing is intrinsically what it appears to be.

Every characteristic we assign turns out on analysis to depend on conditions; the appearance of a given nature is the appearance of a relation seen from one side.

Oppositions are useful but never self-grounding.

Human and machine, friend and enemy, good and bad: each pair generates its own questioning and can never settle the question by itself.

    Emptiness is not a licence.

Since nothing has an independent nature, nothing is beyond change and no position is final; refusing to recognise that is how small certainties become large harms.

Name the conditions, and the contradiction dissolves.

In nearly every hard case the parties are arguing about intrinsic natures — of minds, of ownership, of value — and dissolving those is cheaper than adjudicating them.

Whatever values the system displays were produced by conditions. That does not make them unreal; it makes them revisable by changing the conditions. The court that grasps this has already won half the argument about what is being aligned to what.
