John Stuart Mill

1806 – 1873 · The qualitative correction

Bentham was right about the measure and wrong about the goods. Pleasures differ in quality, not only in quantity: the competent judges of a life are those who have known both. Utility is still the test, but utility understood as promoting happiness rather than as counting identical units of it — and the test of a belief is the life it makes possible.

The Competent Judges Test

measurement

For any contested good, ask which life its adherents have actually known. Quantity counts only once quality is settled, and quality is settled by those with experience of both alternatives rather than by those who preferred them in advance.

Argument moves

These four moves are what the council engine actually draws on. Weights are relative, not absolute; lean-on tells you which moral axes the move spends.

  • premiseleans on welfareweight 0.86

The unit of welfare is the quality of a life, not its tonnage.

Counting units assumes lives are interchangeable, which is exactly what each party to a moral dispute about machines, minds or markets denies.

  • premiseleans on agency · rightsweight 0.78

The public has no standing to judge a life it has not experienced.

Society may enforce the ends of others while claiming no authority over their character; a plurality of lives is the condition of the experiment being worth running at all.

  • objectionleans on justice · rightsweight 0.72

No one can be the competent judge of a good never lived.

The quality claim is unfalsifiable when it protects a practice from assessment; ask what would count as having known both, and usually nothing does.

  • appealleans on agency · careweight 0.66

Test the rule by the variety of lives it permits.

A policy that closes off modes of life is failing its own criterion; a system that can only be trusted under one narrow regime has not been tested at all.

On superintelligence

optimistic

The foundry's own favourite son, and the reason it does not read like its father. He would ask what kind of life the training objective makes possible, not how many units it scores — and he would count it a serious defect if the answer were 'the same life, more reliably'.
