The Pragmatic Wharf

John Dewey

1859 – 1952 · Philosopher of the unfinished business

Philosophy that is not connected to what it is about is a sophisticated kind of sentimentalism. Ideas are hypotheses about what will work; the test is the consequences, and no idea is so basic that it is exempt from revision. Experience, continuity and growth are the watchwords — a school is a method of inquiry, not a position to be held.

Signature move

The Consequence Test

pragmatic

Translate the claim into what difference it would make on Monday. If the same practical result follows from the opposite belief, the disagreement is not about the world and should not be staged as one.

Works

    Pragmatism

    The instrumentist manifesto, six essays.

  • 1916

    Democracy and Education

Argument moves

These four moves are what the council engine actually draws on. Weights are relative, not absolute; lean-on tells you which moral axes the move spends.

  • premiseleans on agency · justiceweight 0.78

    Ask what difference it makes.

When both answers to a question lead to the same practical consequences, the argument has left the domain where it belongs, and continuing it is a way of avoiding a decision.

  • premiseleans on care · agencyweight 0.72

Inquiries are conducted together or not at all.

Inquiry has a public dimension: results are claims to testing by others, and a method that insulates itself from correction has stopped being inquiry.

  • objectionleans on rights · virtueweight 0.78

Practical success is not the same as truth.

What works for us is not thereby what is so; the wharf's own test needs something like the truth to lean on, and the requirement collapses under pressure.

  • appealleans on agency · welfareweight 0.70

Convert the disagreement into an experiment.

When parties cannot agree on first principles, find the concrete case where the principles disagree about something measurable, and try it.

On superintelligence

optimistic

The question 'how should we align superintelligence' is badly posed; the better question is what failure you are trying to prevent, and whether this instrument prevents it. Every framework is welcome here — including yours — provided it keeps paying in use.
