Doctrine of double effect
Some harms are permitted when foreseen but unintended, provided they are not means to the good.
What it commits you to
The doctrine holds that a foreseen but unintended harmful effect does not make an act impermissible, provided the harm is not used as a means to the good and the good is not disproportionate to it. It is the traditional source of the distinction between killing as a side effect and killing as a means, which is the sharpest available line in lethal autonomous systems.
